My System

My system is always changing but as you can probably tell, I like the Sansui most.

All the equipment sits on a dedicated audio isolation platform. "ok, a bit of white chipboard on 8 mid-range drivers hahaha" Plus I have some old Christmas lights underneath to give that retro glow.

Its a very narrow room but I love it, I'm sitting right up close and playing at very low levels. The soundstage is massive and theres no booming bass, no echo, hardly any room noise at all. Theres also loads of "stuff" in there which must help defuse the sound. I often test stuff in the front room aswell but the sound is never as good.

Above is a pic of the IMF TLS50 speakers undergoing drastic modification to somehow improve their dull performance. Using an 8" 1960s Russian full-range driver as a tweeter, very smooth and open but lacking in detail.

On the right: a collection of bits I picked up a few years back. 18" Goodmans audiom drivers on the left and a pair of later 18-p. Celestion County speakers on top of some homemade jobies and of course TDL RTL3 on the outside.

Left: Sansui AU-919, Technics RS-9900. Middle: Pioneer SA-9900, Sansui CA-2000, Sansui AU-9900. Right: 3 x Sansui BA-2000 power amps.

  2. Like me you have a music room to dedicate your hobby. Luckily mine had an existing wooden parquet floor and despite it being quite cluttered it still has a resonance that helps the sound. I don't have any curtains just roller blinds. It could do with being a bit bigger as air volume and space allows the speakers to throw the sound. Like you I think Sansui is the coolest and possibly highest end gear ever made for the home audio enthusiast. I can only ogle the pre and power amps. I have a Sansui 717 compleyely refurbished recapped etc and a Sansuit TU719 tuner. On the whole thoigh I have for family history and sound quality always liked Philips equipment when it produced quality separates. I have an old school Philips Reverbeo stereo FM valve radio from the mid 60s refurbed and retrofitted with Bluetooth. In the music room I have several Philips CD players, the 85O mk2 and 951, plus the earliest players made the 28, 100 and 104. They all work being recapped etc, the vintage lasers are virtually indrstructible. I pair them with the 960 integrated amp and the pre/power "Black Tulip" 380/38 combo plis a 180 tunet. For sentimental reasons I have a 621 "fish eye" amplifier and 651 tuner plus 212 electronic turntable. I have a couple of DVD-Audio/SACD machines I run tjrough tjese sustems. On tje speaker front it's all AR Acoustic Research, the AR92s with 22" woofers, the AR92s with 10", and the AR162 "tower" speakers which have 8" coupled woofers in each box. In the living room I also have a pair of AR12s on matching stands which ate 3 ways and sound sweet. TOther turntable is a Toshiba SR250 simple low cost belt drive. Mudn't forget the Philips N4414 reel to reel refurbished and belted at huve cost but works perfectly, a real joy. YOU SEE THERE IS SOMEBODY JUST AS CRAZY AS YOU OUT THERE. All the best David
